Thousands of painted storks migrate every year, around January, to the warmer areas of Veerapuram and live there till August. We have an attendant to take care of injured birds and chicks that fall from trees due to strong winds.

They are treated by our wildlife veterinary doctor and cared for till they are able to rejoin the group. In case they are unable to do so, they live with us in the aviary at our Wildlife Rescue Centre.

With almost 100% of the body covered by a very bad skin problem, she couldn’t even sleep because of the pain. We had to pack her into a big ball, and clean all the wounds everyday waiting for the skin to recover by itself without getting any more infections.

The recover took time and wasn’t easy, and today things are a lot better. The gaps in her hair are no longer skin problems, these are scars remaining from the treatment, and nothing will grow anymore on them. She doesn’t seem to care at all, once she is happy being the biggest troublemaker here.

Those animals that need long and supervised medical care remain with us as in-patients till they are ready to go back to their area/homes. In case they are not fit enough to go back, they receive life time care at our shelter.

She has been living all this 10 months in a small cage at the roof of our hospital during Karuna was doing a lot of effort along with other organizations to construct her brand-new compound.

After some sleep and a small trip, Balu can now keep recovering of her sad past in this new luxury 1/2 acre home that includes a private pool and flower decorated walls.

The compound was only possible due to donations of Free The Bears Fundation and The Winsome Constance Kindness Trust, whom we thank very much for believing in Karuna’s work with wildlife.

Until the court case is decided, the bulls are still officially in our custody and property of the government. All the villagers that wished to take care of a group of bulls had to sign an agreement that points:

the bulls are still over official custody of Karuna;

they must give them back if they can’t feed or don’t want them anymore;

the animals can’t be sold or sent to slaughter;

commitment to the animals’ health, feeding and good fit condition.

With that, Karuna expect to give these animals a good living environment and help the farmers in their daily work.

A completely devastated scenery of grazing areas and the non-availability of clean water to drink led the animals to a cruel survival challenge.

No one knows how many were washed away, died of ingesting salt water, taken for slaughter, wandering around without proper food & water or stolen by other people who lost their cattle. There is no way to identify a stray animal from an owned animal, but one thing is sure: most of the animals are feeding on rotting garbage or on nothing, and drinking contaminated water.

Goats are grazing on the roadsides, totally and completely contaminated with bleach powder. They get diarrhea. Between 200-300 dogs died in Nagapattinam, poisoned by local authorities.The tsunami has affected the animals in a different way than it has the people.

We had been feeding literally hundreds of animals along the shore and in Nagapattinam, but this was only very little that we could do, compared to the need.
