Karuna Society
Dear Friends of Karuna
Running an animal shelter on a daily basis is a challenge. Accident cases, sick puppies, cruel practices – there is no end to it. We persevere due to the happiness we experience when the animals survive and recover and go back on the road or to their owner.
The ones that stay with us become our family and loved ones. Their basic needs are food, shelter and medication. Many times we have no funds to pay the bills but we cannot stop feeding animals or tell the attendants that we are not able to pay their salaries. This is a constant source of stress and worry.
To implement “a designated donation” which is a specific grant or donation from a donor or agency, will sometimes add to the stress when the basic needs of the animals are not met. Repainting the clinics and shelter was not on the list of our immediate needs as the animals do not eat paint and it would not pay attendants’  salaries.
But we had to admit that all the buildings looked drab and depressing after many years of sun, rain and cleaning. We happily accepted the donation for upgrading the clinics and shelter with all the above problems in mind.
The work has taken more than two months but here you can see the results.
We have to admit that the energy has changed! It makes a huge difference to be surrounded by bright colours, clean kennels and treatment rooms, and a well organized compound for the disabled animals with new plants and more shade.
Visitors feel the difference and show more appreciation of our work. The staff is happier in their daily work. There is just MORE HAPPINESS all around!
This called for a celebration! We could celebrate three events together: the existence of Karuna for 12.5 years, the gift of the projector and screen we received from “Help Animals India” to show the Plastic Cow film in the villages, and the upgrading and painting of the clinics.
We showed the film for the first time in Telugu (the local language) to our own staff and their families, and we thanked them all for the years of hard work for the animals.
What is the underlying message of this story? We REALLY, REALLY need your support for the basic needs of the animals! Their immediate needs are always the same: treatment and medication, food, a place to lie down, and somebody to look after their needs.
We request all our Friends of Karuna to become “patrons” and commit, even in a small way, to the basic needs of our animals in distress by a regular monthly donation to provide them some security.
