Drought Update – April 2014

DROUGHT UPDATE

April 2014

Dear Friends,

This is an update on the feeding program for our 300 cows and buffalo at the Ahimsa farm. We are now feeding maize stalks which we put through a chaff cutter. This means that 100% of the grass will be eaten. In the pictures below, you see the machine, the cuttings, our people filling the bags and then transporting it to the cattle sheds.

Even though the heat is extremely intense, we have not lost any animal. The bore wells are still providing water but it is still early in the season.  We still have 2-3 months before the rains come.

We have also started to grow some green fodder on our Ahimsa land that we can start giving to the cows and buffaloes shortly.  As it is in limited supply, we will mix it in with the maize cuttings.

In addition to the green fodder and maize we are also mixing up a feed from grains which is 300 kg mixed with water. One kg for each animal. We distribute it as a paste in the fodder troughs. All together, even though it is a lot of work in this heat, we feel happy that we can care, feed and protect these animals.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our well wishers who responded to our recent appeal for assistance for our cattle during this ongoing drought period by providing the much needed financial support.
